Terry Triumphs at J/22 North American Championship

Terry Flynn of Texas added another J/22 championship to his collection as he prevailed over 58 other teams at the 2006 J/22 North American Championship. With a total score of only 15 points spanning seven races, Flynn’s consistency dominated the regatta despite very puffy and shifty conditions on Lake Minnetonka . Flynn’s previous list of victories in the J/22 includes a World Championship in 2001 and North American Championships in 1998, 1996 and 1995. The 1996 event was also held on Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota. Additionally, he won the 2003 and 1998 Midwinter Championships.

J/22 Fleet 1 hosted the regatta from September 13-15 at Wayzata Yacht Club, although the first day of racing was abandoned due to a lack of wind. The two days of racing that occurred featured breezes ranging from 7-18 knots. Chris Doyle of New York won the award for top amateur sailor, finishing with 42 points and two bullets. Complete results may be found at www.j22northamericans.com.

The 2007 North American Championship will be hosted by Cleveland Yachting Club in Ohio from September 18-23.

J/22 North American Championship

September 11-15, 2006
Wayzata Yacht Club on Lake Minnetonka, Minneapolis, MN
Congratulations to Kelson Elam and team on their Midwinters victory and to the Houston Yacht Club for a fantastic event! With that over, Wayzata Yacht Club and Fleet # 1 are stepping up our planning efforts for the 2006 North American Championship this September.

Our website was put together by Dan Towey and can be found at http://www.j22northamericans.com. Race dates and events are posted, and we will provide updates here as plans progress.

Jon Noller has several key sponsors confirmed, including Sunsets Restaurant and Evergreene Jewelers, and we are in talks with several others to help ensure a first class event.

Kelson Elam of Rockwall, TX topped 46 other competitors to win the 2006 J/22 Midwinter Championship

Midwinters 2006 Temperatures were cold but Kelson Elam and Dave Van Cleef were hot in this year’s J/22 Midwinter Championship held at Houston Yacht Club in La Porte, TX. Both skippers ended the fifth and final race with 13 points after the throw-out, but Elam won on the tie breaker. Rob Johnston was third with 17 points.

From February 17-19, five races were sailed in plenty of breeze and shifty conditions. Day two racing was canceled because of high winds and low temperatures that made for unsafe conditions. Unfortunately day three temperatures did not improve, but winds had subsided so the fleet donned their snow ski apparel and sailed out to the race course.

Thank you to Houston Yacht Club who stepped in to host the event after the original host (Southern Yacht Club, New Orleans) was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

Barkow Dominates Rolex International Women's Keelboat Championship

Team Repeats as Regatta Winners

Not since the early days of US Sailing's Rolex International Women's Keelboat Championship when Betsy Alison began her streak of five wins has this regatta seen a performance from one sailor and her team as was witnessed this year in Annapolis. Sally Barkow (Nashotah, WI) and her Team 7 crew clinched the title at the conclusion of day four with one race to spare. With a scoreline totaling 14 points in 10 races, Barkow topped a 42-boat fleet stocked with impressive competitors.

Rolex Juniors Take "Next Step" to Keelboat Sailing

Rolex Juniors

At the Rolex International Women's Keelboat Championship (Rolex IWKC), held September 17-23 on Chesapeake Bay, it wasn't all about which team won, even though Wisconsin's Sally Barkow and crew wowed the 42-boat fleet with their stellar boat handling to carry off the title. It also was about who showed up. In addition to regatta participants, which included both experienced and novice sailors and mothers as well as mothers-to-be and daughters, a group of 27 junior sailors, ages 13-17, flew in from all corners of the continent and the UK for a long weekend of Rolex Next Step activities.

Twenty-three boats from as far away as Rocky River, OH; Toronto, Canada; and Annapolis, MD joined the local fleet on Lake George for the largest fleet in the regatta’s 10-year history.

Record Number of J/22s Expected for 2005 World Championship in The Netherlands

The Dutch J/22 Class Association, in cooperation with the WSV Braassemermeer and the ISCM in Medemblik, is preparing for the J/22 2005 World Championship, to be held from July 1-9 at the ISCM in Medemblik.

After successful J/22 Worlds in The Netherlands in 1995 and in 2000, the Dutch Class is eager to continue this tradition. With 60 participating boats in 1995 and 93 in 2000, they now expect to set a new J/22 record of more than 100 participating boats. Teams are expected from the Cayman Islands, South Africa, the United States, Canada, France, Spain, Italy, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands and more.

Alec Cutler is New J/22 World Champion

Alec Cutler of Annapolis, MD, was crowned the 2004 World Champion after holding off reigning champ John den Engelsman of the Netherlands by two points at the World Championship in Annapolis. Cutler was joined by crew Paul Murphy and sailmaker Max Skelley.

The regatta boasted 130 boats, the largest fleet ever to participate in a J/22 championship. The first two days of racing served as a qualifying series, splitting the fleet into gold and silver divisions. The three races in steady breeze on the opening day proved to be the qualifying races after the wind fizzled out on the second day.

Nixon Wins Tune-up for J/22 World Championship

Scott Nixon followed up on his victory at the J/22 Midwinters with a win at the Annapolis NOOD Regatta, which featured 80 J/22s on the line. Nixon, who started the regatta with two firsts and a sixth on the first day of racing, was using the event as a tune-up for the J/22 Worlds to be held May 18-21 in Annapolis. Nixon explained his dominance by saying, "We've sailed a lot lately. We even sailed the J/24 Nationals last week and placed second." Nixon also had some help from the winner of the 2002 J/22 World Championship, Terry Flynn, who sailed with Nixon during the NOOD Regatta because one of Nixon's regular crew, Mike Wolfs, was sailing in the Star Worlds.

Dates and Location Announced for 2005 World Championship

After successful J/22 Worlds in the Netherlands in 1995 and in 2000, the Dutch Class is eager to continue this tradition. With 60 participating boats in 1995 and 93 boats in 2000, a new record of more than 100 J/22s are expected in 2005. Competitors are anticipated to arrive from the Cayman Islands, South Africa, the United States, Canada, France, Spain, Italy, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and more.

After approval from the IJ22CA to host the event, the Dutch members voted for the Class to proceed with the preparations. It is never to early, so put this event in your calendar-the largest keelboat one design regatta of the Netherlands in 2005. A special website will be opened shortly; please follow www.j22.nl for details.

Among the items discussed were the relationship between Class and builder, geographic distribution of major regattas, rule changes and overall marketing of the Class. The committee and governors are excited about the items that were discussed, and the Class is already planning additional meetings to further develop the ideas.

Sixty boats competed in the international event, spanning nine races over four days from October 8-11. "This could have been one of the toughest regattas I have ever sailed in, in any class," observed Flynn. "The competition was quite deep. Any one of the top 15 was capable of winning the regatta."

Fifty-two boats sailed in the J/22 East Coast Championship in Annapolis, MD from September 13-15. Competitors were treated to some of the best conditions Annapolis has to offer, with a consistent breeze of 10 to18 mph and lumpy waves. The regatta served as great practice for several teams who will sail in similar conditions at the upcoming World Championship in Corpus Christi, TX.

The team of Greg Fisher, Jo Ann Jones, Keven Eiber and Jeff Eiber won the championship with scores of 3,1,1,2,3,1 for the overall win (they threw out an 11th place finish, where they were ocs). Ray Wulff of Annapolis was second (just two points back), and Nancy Haberland finished third.

Dear J/22 Sailors:

The USA J/22 Class had a very successful year starting with the Mid-Winters at Southern Yacht Club, North Americans at Rochester Yacht Club and the inaugural Rolex International Women’s Keelboat Championship sailed in J/22 for the first time.
