The 41-year-old Dutchman Den Engelsman, winner of the J/22 European title and current national champion, has won the J/22 World Championship at Porto San Rocco (Trieste). Weather conditions strongly influenced the week of sailing, organized by the "Societą velica di Barcola e Grignano" with the collaboration of Sailing Planet.

Olympic Hopeful Barkow Crowned as 2003 Rolex Champion

Sally Barkow of Nashotah, WI and her crew of Debbie Capozzi (Bayport, NY), Carrie Howe (Grosse Pointe, MI) and Annie Lush (Bournemouth, England) have won U.S. Sailing's 2003 Rolex International Women's Keelboat Championship (Rolex IWKC), which began September 29 and concluded on October 3 on the Chesapeake Bay off Annapolis, MD. Going into the final day, Barkow's team held a 20-point lead over the 66 teams competing. In light eight-ten knot breezes, the foursome once again showed command of their boathandling skills and the scoreboard. With finishes of three and eight, they maintained a healthy lead on the fleet and became champions in what has become one of the world's most prestigious women's sailing regattas.

McChesney Victorious at J/22 North Americans

Peter McChesney of Annapolis, MD has become the 2003 J/22 North American Champion, beating out 46 other competitors at Youngstown Yacht Club from June 24-27. With a total of 38 points, including two first-place finishes, McChesney and crew Margaret McChesney and Keith Murphy beat out strong competition such as Greg Fisher and Kelson Elam, who finished second and third respectively. The event featured a wide array of conditions, ranging from light winds on the first day (when only one race was completed) to windy and wavy conditions on the final day. But it was McChesney's team that survived the nine races and came away victorious.


Rolex International Women's Keelboat Championship Draws 61 Teams
Betsy Alison Returns to Competition

As of the August 6 "early entry deadline" for the Rolex International Women's Keelboat Championship, 61 international teams have entered the world's premier women's keelboat regatta. Sailors from Bermuda, Canada, Cayman Islands, Denmark, New Zealand, South Africa and 16 U.S. states will take to the Chesapeake Bay on International J/22 Class sailboats. The biennial event, celebrating its 10th anniversary of offering women of all abilities the opportunity for top-level competition, is scheduled for September 27 - October 3 at the Annapolis Yacht Club, in Maryland.


"Road to Rolex" Clinics to Prepare Women Sailors for September Competition
Grants Offered to Clinic Hosts and Instructors

Annapolis, Md. (April 16, 2003) - To foster growth in women's sailing, Rolex Watch U.S.A. has announced that it will sponsor several 2003 "Road to Rolex" clinics across the U.S. and abroad in preparation for the Rolex International Women's Keelboat Championship (Rolex IWKC), scheduled for this September 28-October 3 at Annapolis Yacht Club, MD. The organizing committee is accepting inquiries from organizations interested in hosting a "Road to Rolex" clinic.


J/22s Flood Annapolis for NOOD Regatta

Moderate to light and shifty winds, in addition to a strong current on the Chesapeake Bay, dominated the Annapolis NOOD Regatta, held May 2-4 at the Annapolis Yacht Club. Peter McChesney, with his wife Margaret and friend Keith Murphy as crew, outperformed 50 other J/22s to walk away with the victory. Despite a 12th-place finish on the first day of racing, McChesney pulled out two bullets to win the event. The J/22 was the largest fleet at the Annapolis NOODS, which featured a record 273 boats from 17 classes.

Jim Hayes placed second in the event, 11 points out of the top spot. Greg Fisher, who won two of the five races, finished third. Lorie Stout, who won race four, finished eleventh overall.


2003 J22 Volvo North American Championship


The organizing committee of the 2003 J-22 North American Championship is proud to announce that Volvo has come aboard as the title sponsor of this year's championship regatta. The official name of the event is 2003 J-22 Volvo North American Championship.


"Road to Rolex" Women's Sailing Clinic

On June 8 and August 9, Annapolis J/22 Fleet 19 will host a two-part "Road to Rolex" women's sailing clinic, in preparation for the Rolex International Women's Keelboat Championship (IWKC) to be held September 28 to October 3 in Annapolis, MD. Well-known competitive sailor and U.S. Naval Academy coach Nancy Haberland of Annapolis will conduct the clinic, which includes a skill assessment and review of basic tactics for fleet racing. Haberland won the 1997 Rolex IWKC as crew and finished fourth at the regatta in 2001 as a skipper.


Rolex Next Step Program Provides Opportunities for Junior Women Sailors

The 2003 Rolex International Women's Keelboat Championship (Rolex IWKC) Outreach Committee invites junior women sailors to participate in the Rolex Next Step Program, September 26-28 in Annapolis, MD. The event will be held in conjunction with the Rolex IWKC, part of U. S. Sailing's adult championship series, to be held September 27-October 3 at the Annapolis Yacht Club (AYC).


ISAF Issues Rule 42 Interpretations

ISAF has today issued a number of racing rule 42 interpretations that will clarify the rule and make it easier for the judges to enforce rule 42 with consistency around the world. You will find attached a copy of the RRS 42 Interpretations as a .PDF file.

The interpretations will come into force on 26 April 2003, but any event may adopt the interpretations before then, provided the judges brief the competitors.


VC Performance Rigging & J/22 NAs

The organizing committee of the 2003 J/22 North American Championships is proud to announce that VC Performance Rigging, Annapolis, MD, has joined our team as a sponsor-partner. VC Performance Rigging has established themselves as one of the premier rigging shops for the most competitive sailors. They provide custom rigging services for highly competitive classes such as the J/22 and J/24, as well as equipment for larger boats like the Farr 40 and Grand Prix Offshore racers.


1st Joint Meeting of the US Class Association and the District Governors

The United States J/22 Class Association executive committee and the district governors held their first joint meeting of the new year via conference call on March 19. Although the executive committee meets monthly, this was the first time that the group was expanded to include the governors. Jim Hayes, Lars Hansen and Scott Law joined the meeting for valuable discussion on suggestions for better implementation and promotion of the Class. Among the items discussed were the relationship between Class and builder, geographic distribution of major regattas, rule changes and overall marketing of the Class. The committee and governors are excited about the items that were discussed, and the Class is already planning additional meetings to further develop the ideas.


Texans Dominate World Championship

The competition was fierce at the J/22 World Championship in Corpus Christi, TX, but Terry Flynn, Randy Borges and Paul Grenauer launched a comeback in the final race for the prestigious victory. Sixty boats competed in the international event, spanning nine races over four days from October 8-11. "This could have been one of the toughest regattas I have ever sailed in, in any class," observed Flynn. "The competition was quite deep. Any one of the top 15 was capable of winning the regatta."

Terry Flynn and Scott Nixon dominated the regatta, but it was Flynn who pulled out the victory at the 2003 Legg Mason J/22 Midwinter Championship. Held from February 14-16 at Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans, LA, 54 boats from all across the country and as far away as Montana competed in the popular event. The three-day, seven-race regatta was sailed in winds ranging from 10 to 22 knots. Terry Flynn 1st, Scott Nixon 2nd, Zak Famberg 3rd.
